Plone 4 Reaches Release Candidate Status

The Plone 4.0 Framework Team and release manager Eric Steele are pleased to announce the first release candidate for Plone 4.0.

Plone 4.0 brings massive performance and scalability improvements, a brand new default theme and a revamped user interface.

New Plone Theme

Other new features include:

  • An improved first-run experience, particularly creating a new Plone site
  • Streamlined user account creation and extensible member profiles
  • Upgraded infrastructure: Plone now runs on Python 2.6 and Zope 2.12 making for easier deployment and a smaller memory footprint
  • Built-in file-system storage for Image and File content types makes databases with large binaries easier to manage
  • Pop-up forms for login and many management functions
  • TinyMCE visual editor improves formatted text editing
  • Full-text indexing of East Asian languages
  • Group dashboards
  • The new standard theme utilizes a flexible, grid-based layout that provides a better base for clean, modern theming
  • Hundreds of bug fixes and tweaks
  • A well-tested upgrader that makes upgrading from Plone 3 fast and easy
  • Performance increases that nearly double pages per second in typical situations.

How you can help

Release candidates serve as proposed final releases for the project.  While Plone 4.0 has been tested by many members of the Plone developer community, and is already running in production on a number of sites, it needs wider testing to flush out any remaining critical bugs before we can stamp it as a “final release.”  And that’s where we need you.

Here’s what you can do to help:

  1. Test our installer packages by downloading and installing Plone 4.0 RC1 from the Plone 4.0 downloads page.
  2. Help us test the upgrade scripts by migrating a copy of your site’s data.
  3. Report any errors to the Plone bug tracker.

e107 open source CMS version 0.7.23 Released

e107 v.0.7.23 is now available. This release is primarily aimed at reducing vulnerabilities and increasing e107′s protection against exploits. (a special thank you to Justin Klein Keane (“MadIrish”) for alerting us to the vulnerabilities, and commenting on the fixes.) One of the changes will also affect users who include youtube videos or other embedded media within their site; please see the included readme for more information.

This release also includes some minor feature enhancements:

Download Flood Protection (simultaneous downloads)
Found in admin under downloads->options. Option to prevent a user from downloading multiple files within a short time-period.

YouTube bbcode ([youtube][/youtube])
Allows you to easily add youtube videos to pages of your website. A conversion script is provided for those who have utilized html-code from Youtube already and wish to convert to the bbcode equivalent. (see included README.txt for details). By default, ‘dangerous’ HTML (such as the ‘embed’ code used with many media) is neutralised when it is displayed. This traps malicious code that may have entered the database before the latest updates were put in place. This filter can be disabled through the preference ‘Filter HTML content’.

Language-pack Creator
Found in admin under languages->tools. For those who are translating e107 into other languages, this tool will zip up your core language files into the standard language-pack format so that they can be shared easily with the e107 community. Important information on using this tool can be found here.

Support for security include scripts.
e107 now supports 3rd-Party security includes such as ZB Block without having to manually modify core scripts. Just install them in your root directory as you would normally. To include ZB Block, you would add the following to e107_config.php: $CLASS2_INCLUDE = ‘zbblock/zbblock.php’; . e107 would then automatically include it in every page of your site.

The full changelog can be found here
We recommend that everyone upgrades to this new release as soon as possible.

BigBlueButton and Multilingual Improvements Emerge from TikiFest Ottawa

BigBlueButton and Multilingual Improvements Emerge from TikiFest Ottawa

At the most recent TikiFest in Ottawa, Canada, several Tiki Community members met to socialize and contribute their talents to the future of Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware. For four days (August 15 – 18), the attendees (including several remote participants) discussed, planned, and coded many features and enhancements planned for Tiki 6.

The TikiFest ended with a wine-and-cheese social at the Code Factory in Ottawa, hosted by Citadel Rock, Blindside Networks, Pondstone Communications, and AvanTech.net, all of whom are active participants in the Tiki and BigBlueButton communities.

The cornerstone of the TikiFest was to improve the integration between Tiki and BigBlueButton that was first introduced in Tiki 5. Additionally, a full day of the event was reserved for various internationalization (i18n) topics, including:

  • Establishing a collaborative multilingual glossary
  • Creating a translation server
  • Making it easier for the Tiki Community to contribute translations

See http://tiki.org/TikiFestBigBlueButton to review all items from this event (including pictures and video from the event).

Several TikiFests are planned for the upcoming months in Montréal, New York City, and Berlin. See the Tiki Community calendar at http://tiki.org for details.

Pligg CMS Widget Contest – Win an Amazon Kindle!

Owning an Amazon Kindle just got a lot easier! We at Pligg CMS are proud to announce that we are holding another contest for developers. This time around we are asking developers to create free Pligg widgets to share with the community. What’s even better is that widgets are REALLY EASY to develop!

How to Enter:

Submit your widget to the Free Widgets forum. All new submissions are moderated, so your post will not appear immediately after being submitted. Your widget should appear within a few hours of submission, once a forum moderator has approved it. We reserve the right to deny widgets that do not offer any features that we consider to be useful. If your widget offers some type of meaningful functionality it will be approved, we just don’t want to see some mindless “Hello World” type widgets.

* Adult female human hand not included.

At the time of this contest announcement, there is no set deadline for submitting your widget. We will alert everyone when we are nearing the end of the contest deadline and give developers a week long grace period to submit their work before starting the poll that determines the winners.

How Winners are Chosen:

Once the competition period ends, we will host a poll where users can vote on their favorite widget. The widget that receives the most votes by the time the poll closes will be announced as the winner.

Prizes:

The following prizes will be given out to the top 5 widget authors:

* Black electronics are wicked awesome

The Fine Print:

  1. The developer must be the original author of the code. When using third party open source code as the basis of your work, you must properly credit that code and consider it for your own widget license.
  2. The widget must use un-compiled, open source code.
  3. Widget authors may choose from a number of open source licenses when submitting their widget to the forums, including:
    • Apache License, 2.0
    • Simplified BSD license
    • GNU General Public License (GPL)
    • GNU Library or “Lesser” General Public License (LGPL)
    • MIT license
    • Creative Commons License
  4. Contest winners located outside of the continental United States must provide shipping costs, unless a local supplier is able to provide the same prize at equal or lesser value.
  5. Authors are limited to only receiving 1 prize, given for the highest rated widget based on poll results. If you develop the #1 and #3 widgets, you will only be given the #1 prize. The #4 widget author would then receive the 3rd place prize.

toendaCMS closes its doors

In a rather bleak posting on the toendaCMS website, the author has stated that toendaCMS is finished and that he intends to let the project die. For those who may be interested, there is a chance to take this project over and continue it.

From the announcement:

After weeks and months of my inactivity, i decided to let toendaCMS die completely. I have put a lot of time and effort into this project, but unfortunately were not achieved the desired goals. Other projects have made it (WordPress, Mambo, Joomla, Typo3, etc.), toendaCMS remained small and niche product. Since I have no desire to put all my time in an otherwise dead project, I let it rest now.
If anyone wants to take it, he can do that.

And so I say goodbye at this point.

Introducing Strelin CMS – a fork of Joomla 1.5

Strelin CMS is a new fork of the popular open source content management system, Joomla!. Forked from version 1.5, this new CMS is described as having an advanced ACL that Joomla! currently is lacking.

The first beta was released on July 12, 2010.

This is a very new project and right now, there’s minimal information available on the site about why they decided to fork Joomla! as opposed to contribute to it directly.

As far as we can tell, there is currently very little to differentiate it from from Joomla! (other than an ACL option which is forthcoming in Joomla 1.6) and the website needs quite a bit of work, but regardless, we wanted our readers to know that it’s out there.

If you have tried or know more about this CMS, please let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

You can visit the website here: http://www.strelin.com

DotNetNuke Corp. Introduces Enterprise Edition of Industry Leading Web Content Management Platform

DotNetNuke Corp., the company behind the most widely adopted Web Content Management Platforms for Microsoft .NET, today announced the release of the DotNetNuke Enterprise Edition. The Enterprise Edition includes the new DotNetNuke Content Staging feature that allows users to edit and approve content on a staging server prior to pushing the site to production. In addition, the DotNetNuke Web CMS includes a new Content Localization feature that enables easy management of multi-language web sites. The Content Localization feature is included in all Editions of the platform including the Enterprise, Professional and Community Editions.

News Highlights

Exclusive to the Enterprise Edition, Content Staging allows users to create a separate staging server where all intended production web site changes can be implemented and tested before being published to the production server. Ideal for organizations with many content contributors and tight restrictions on web site content publishing and review, the highly advanced system compares the staging server configuration to the production server to identify missing components and provides a detailed view of all planned changes. Other features include:

  • An audit tool that creates a record of all publishing events
  • A “white list” in which users can define which modules should push both their settings and content during publishing and which should push only the module settings
  • A simple, secure publishing function which allows users to easily push their site from staging to production

All Editions of DotNetNuke including the Enterprise, Professional and Community, now feature a new Content Localization capability that helps users manage translated versions of all or some of their web pages. Ideal for multi-language web sites, the feature includes management and configuration-mapping tools to keep translated pages synchronized across a web site.

With the introduction of the Enterprise Edition, DotNetNuke will no longer offer the Elite Edition, which will now comprise the Professional Edition plus Elite Support. The new Elite Support option – available for the Professional and Enterprise Editions – features extended support hours, faster guaranteed support, priority management of support tickets, installation upgrade assistance, and source code access to the proprietary Professional or Enterprise Edition modules.

DotNetNuke is the fastest growing open source web CMS ever with nearly 900 subscription customers, 33,000 Snowcovered marketplace customers, and 400 percent year-over-year growth. Connect with us online: Twitter.com/dnncorp (company) or Twitter.com/dnnsc (Snowcovered marketplace); DotNetNuke blogs; and the DotNetNuke Community LinkedIn Group.

“The new DotNetNuke Enterprise Edition includes Content Staging which allows organizations to edit and approve web site changes on a staging server prior to publishing to production. Content Staging meets the requirements of our mid-sized and large customers who have formalized rules, guidelines and policies around publishing content. We also added a new Content Localization feature to the DotNetNuke core. The availability of Content Localization in our Community Edition demonstrates our continued commitment to the open core model and to the community at large. Content Localization will benefit our users who build, deploy, and maintain multi-language web sites.” – Navin Nagiah, CEO

Symphony CMS 2.1.1 has been released

Symphony is a powerful and versatile XSLT-powered open source content management system. We recently reviewed this great CMS, you can read the review here: Symphony CMS Review.

They just announced a new release of Symphony CMS, version 2.1.1. Highlights of this release include:

Bug Fixes

  • #341: Clarify copy on limits in DS editor.
  • #374: Fixes Random sorting bug.
  • #375: If the appendFormattedElement() function gets NULL data, it will return before attempting to create an XMLElement object.
  • #375: Using isfile() instead of fileexists(), as the later returns true if the path is a directory or file.
  • #376: Section editor menu-hiding copy tweak.
  • #379: Initialising ExtensionManager before calling isLoggedIn(). This prevents fatal error thrown when trying to set authors non-english language preference.
  • #380: Removing a file now works as expected.
  • #381: Don’t overwrite file when page is a duplicate.
  • #385: Fixed logic in Session class, which was faulty and caused regular logout.
  • #387: Changed length of ‘validator’ fields for Input, Taglist and Upload fields to 255 instead of 50.
  • #389: Fixed event manager. Was incorrectly assigning the event source to a variable ‘type’. This has been renamed to ‘source’.
  • Tweaked updater so it would not keep adding ‘-Indexes’ to the htaccess Options.
  • Fixed rewrite base issue on windows. Also fixes logout issues on windows.

Minor Updates

  • This tweak allows the DS editor to keep custom sort values, instead of forcing ‘asc’, ‘desc’ or ‘random’. This is handy if you want to use dynamic values. E.G. {$order:asc} and still be able to edit the DS via the admin interface. The custom value will show as an item in the select box. So long as it is not changed, the value will persist.
  • Added ‘image/pjpeg’ to the list of image mime types.

Create a Personal Website – FREE

The main goal of the odCMS project is to promote the use of open source web designs. So far we have converted over five hundreds designs into themes where you can use if you have installed odCMS. However, not everyone wants to install odCMS for whatever the reason, to encourage the use of such designs we launch a service where you can create a website using the converted designs for free. The website created can be downloaded along with the designs you use into your own server/webhost without odCMS. Go to http://mysite.odcms.net if you are interested in trying out this service.

If you have already installed odCMS, your comment on improving it is greatly appreciated.

Packt launch fifth annual Open Source Awards

The 2010 Open Source Awards was launched today by Packt, inviting people to visit www.PacktPub.com and submit nominations for their favorite Open Source project. Now in its fifth year, the Award has been adapted from the established Open Source CMS Award with the wider aim of encouraging, supporting, recognizing and rewarding all Open Source projects.

WordPress won the 2009 Open Source Content Management System (CMS) Award in what was a very close contest with MODx and SilverStripe. While MODx was the first runner up, SilverStripe, a Most Promising CMS Award winner in 2008, made its way to the second runner up position in its first year in the Open Source CMS Award final.

The 2010 Award will feature a prize fund of $24,000 with several new categories introduced. While the Open Source CMS Award category will continue to recognize the best content management system, Packt is introducing categories for the Most Promising Open Source Project, Open Source E-Commerce Applications, Open Source JavaScript Libraries and Open Source Graphics Software. CMSes that won the Overall CMS Award in previous years will continue to compete against one another in the Hall of Fame CMS category.

These new categories will ensure that the Open Source Awards is the ultimate platform to recognise excellence within the community while supporting projects both new and old. “We believe that the adaption of the Award and the new categories will provide a new level of accessibility, with the Award recognizing a wider range of Open Source projects; both previous winners while at the same time, encouraging new projects” said Julian Copes, organizer of this year’s Awards.

Packt has opened up nominations for people to submit their favorite Open Source projects for each category at www.PacktPub.com/open-source-awards-home . The top five in each category will go through to the final, which begins in the last week of September. For more information on the categories, please visit Packt’s website http://www.packtpub.com/blog/packt's-2010-open-source-awards-announcement.

ocProducts are pleased to announce the full release of ocPortal Version 5

ocProducts are pleased to announce the full release of ocPortal Version 5, our highly advanced web content management system. This follows a short release candidate version. This version introduces a number of bug fixes, new features, usability improvements, and a wide-sweeping design overhaul since version 4.3.2.

There are a number of key changes and additions within this version of the software; The Admin zone has been given an overhaul including new drop down menus and a much more useful front page. Design change highlights include :

* A complete redesign of the Gallery system (we know this is going to make a lot of people very happy)

* The member profile screen has been completely redesigned

* A restructuring of the member points screen, making the points system far more intuitive.

* The quiz screen has been redesigned

* Just about every side block has been revised

* A brand new commenting interface

We have given an overhaul to commenting, RSS and ratings features. These include allowing guests to choose a display name and improving the previewing of reviews. ocPortal version 5 has been thoroughly tested with IE6 and should display properly on this browser. We do however expect to drop support for IE6 once IE9 is released.

We have put a great deal of work into the ocPortal themeing system, with the aim of making it much easier for users to make their site look just how they want it to. Users can now preview all of the templates they are working on without needing switch between several screens. Other themeing features include making it easier to edit the site logo across all zones & themes, alongside new CSS styled buttons. In addition to the aforementioned template screen preview system, you can methodically work through all the screens in the system in order to ensure your theme looks good.

The ocPortal gallery system has seen a raft of changes, including an improved edit screen and the ability to provide automatic video transcoding (this requires that ffmpeg is installed). There have also been changes and updates within the quiz feature, the events calendar, the catalogue system, the newsletter manager and CEDI.

We have added a new feature that we call “Real-time rain”, which allows you to visualise activity in your website, either in real-time or via historic playback, which you would otherwise only ever see in the form of plain-text logs. This feature is enormous fun for webmasters and is incredibly pretty.

We have made many more changes in addition to those listed above, which are too numerous to include here. If you would like more information (and we hope you do) please come and have a look at everything we have been working on over the last few months; you can find the Full release information at http://ocportal.com/site/news/view/new_releases/ocportal_5_released.htm

Pixie needs your help

At the end of last week the Pixie CMS project submitted a tiny application to the 10k Apart competition. The competition aims to explore what is possible with just 10k of code and the latest bleeding edge web standards.

Our entry is nanoPixie (votes are appreciated), an CMS that makes use of the HTML5 feature contentEditable. nanoPixie is a very basic CMS but it occurred to us that this finally brings true WYSIWYG editing to the web. We saw the future.

We are now on the lookout for three people to join the core Pixie development team to help nanoPixie become Pixie 2.0. If your interested in joining please read "the plan" to find out more.

BC Place Facilitates Internal Communication with Intranet Connections During Post-Olympic Construction

August 18, 2010 – Vancouver, BC -- Intranet Connections (www.intranetconnections.com) is pleased to announce the intranet launch for BC Place, the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.  BC Place launched their Intranet Connections Intranet 2.0 CMS Software in July with goals of improving corporate communication, increasing employee involvement, and enhancing information sharing within the organization.

After the 2010 Winter Games, BC Place was scheduled major construction to revitalize and modernize the facilities, including the largest retractable roof of its kind in the world.  When the Administration team at BC Place learned that half of all full-time staff would be moving to temporary offices at the Vancouver Convention Centre and the other half would remain at BC Place, they immediately became aware that a corporate communication tool was needed to unify the two locations.  The IT team spearheaded the project, identifying an intranet site as the best means to facilitate internal communication and provide a central repository for staff information.

In evaluating intranet solutions, BC Place knew they wanted to find a turnkey product that did not require any programming or custom development in order to get their site up and running.

“We ultimately selected Intranet Connections as an intranet solution because it was out-of the box and it required minimal administration overhead.  Intranet Connections also came highly recommended, was proven in the market place and was developed by a Canadian company.  We really liked the fact that Intranet Connections was a local organization.”  says Winnie Mok, Information Services Manager at BC Place.

Since this was BC Place’s first intranet implementation, Intranet Connections’ suite of ready-to-use applications allowed the intranet development committee to focus efforts on the key success factors for a well received rollout.  Priorities for the launch included: educating users about the role of an intranet, developing dynamic and relevant content and establishing site usage guidelines.

The new intranet has become a central part of BC Place’s multi-location communications and information management strategy.  Construction news, press updates, updated policies and information about their upcoming road show are all posted on the intranet to keep employees at different facilities up to date and in the know.

Packt's 2010 Open Source Awards now open

The 2010 Open Source Awards was launched yesterday by Packt, inviting people to visit www.PacktPub.com and submit nominations for their favorite Open Source project.

For more information on the categories, please visit Packt’s website at www.PacktPub.com/blog/packt’s-2010-open-source-awards-announcement
